Giving back to community not a difficult, time-consuming task
Helping out around the community is a great way to do something good for someone else. Even if you do not have a lot of time to contribute, there are small things you can do.
For my Social Studies Methods course that I am required to take as an elementary education major, we had to do a citizenship project. We had to choose a way to give back to our community, by helping out and providing our time.
We had a lot of choices to choose between and I really thought it would be impossible to find something for me to do that would fit into my busy work and school schedule. But it really was not.
I chose to help out by helping sort clothes and price items for the upcoming rummage sale sponsored by Abundant Harvest, and organization that provides free home-cooked meals to those in need.
After doing it, I felt really good about myself. I realize that this was just a small way to help out, but they had a bunch of items that needed to be sorted and priced, and they did not have the time to do it.
At first I was only doing this because I had to, but after doing it I am really glad I did. I know that the time I gave was small, but it helped them out in a big way. It allows them to have more time to serve food to those who do not have the money to get a good meal.
I know that each one of us here on the campus have busy schedules, but there is a way that you can always help give back to the community. There are many organizations around campus that raise money for other organizations around town.
On a sign I saw the other day for the Teeter-Totter-A-Thon that the members of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Sigma Alpha had, was written, “every penny counts.” That is so true, but not only every penny counts, but also every minute counts. Just giving a little bit of your time to a community organization helps that organization a bunch.
There are tons of organizations and companies that need volunteers to help out. Take a little bit of your time to give back to the community. Even if it is just an hour or so a month, every bit helps.
Do not wait till you have to do it, look into ways that you can contribute your time or even a few dollars to help those that need it. You never know if one day you will be one of those in need and will cherish anything you can get.
