Tennis splits over weekend
The Emporia State tennis team, like the other spring sports at ESU, is coming into the last few weeks of its season. With less than two weeks until their conference tournament in Topeka, the Hornets are getting ready for the meet by facing plenty of out-of-conference opponents.
The past weekend, the men’s team traveled to Sioux Falls, S.D. to play against Minnesota State-Mankato and Augustana College in a pair of matches on consecutive days.
On Friday, the men lost a close contest to MSU-Mankato, 4-5. The Hornet’s top three singles players won their matches. Julian Rios, Nathan Mai, and Kevin Schoon, along with the doubles team of Mai and Schoon won and gave the Hornets their four points of the day. It was the two doubles victories by MSU-Mankato that gave them the edge by one point.
On Saturday, the Hornets came out ready to play against the host team, Augustana College. The men dominated the day, winning 9-0. All singles and doubles matches were won by Emporia State, and all of them by wide margins. The closest individual set was Julian Rio’s first set, in which he won 6-4.
The Hornet women were scheduled to face Fort Hays State; however the matches were moved to April 25th. Both teams were scheduled to face Washburn and Fort Hays on Wednesday. Results were not posted at the time of printing. Next on the schedule is Northwest Missouri State in Emporia on Saturday.
