On Our Mind: Our April Fool's Issue

Du 'Dufucius' Xiaokang / The Bulletin

Editor’s note: The following staff editorial contains potentially offensive language. If you are easily offended by this type of language, please do not read this piece.

Every year on April Fools’ Day (April 1) The Bulletin prints a special satire issue titled “The Bullshit.”

We print a disclaimer above the flag (title) on the front page, which explains that this issue is a spoof issue designed to parody news events, editorials, sports and arts and entertainment content that we cover throughout the school year. It also states that all the articles are completely false, and all names in the articles have been changed, including the writer’s name.

Printing a spoof issue gives The Bulletin an opportunity to lighten up and poke fun at the stories we have written in our regular issues by using wit, irony and some sarcasm.

We know that students and administrators have been disappointed and even upset with past Bullshit issues because they believed that some of the articles were not written in a tasteful and respectful manner.

In past years, we have included more obscene and controversial material in the April Fools’ issue that may have gone over the line. However, each year’s staff can take a different approach to creating a satire paper, and this year we plan to produce true satire with the intention of entertaining the Emporia State community.

We encourage students, faculty and administrators to provide us with constructive feedback on tomorrow’s special issue by calling the phone forum at 341-5469, our editor in chief at 341-5803 or by e-mailing us at bulletin@emporia.edu.
