On Our Mind: Moving during college

Cartoon by Taryn Trousdale

Whether it is a house, an apartment, or even the couch of a friend, there are several important considerations students need to take when moving into or out of a place.

The most important consideration is financial. Although it may seem that the expenses of living on one’s own are minimal, this is not always the case.

When searching for a new place to live many people consider the amount of the security deposit, the monthly rent, and the cost of food. However, there are many more financial responsibilities than this. Most rental properties require the tenant to pay for electricity and gas. Some properties may even require the tenant to pay for water and trash collection. Moreover, this is before considering the cost of a phone line, Internet, and television service.

In addition to the monthly bills each of these services carry, most companies will charge a deposit before service is turned on, especially for new customers without a history of utility accounts.

Students need to consider these financial obligations before deciding on a place to live, and possibly even before considering the search for a place to live.

Financial issues should not be the only concerns for those looking for a residence. Most property owners require tenants to sign a lease that can have a term from six months to a year or more. If one cannot fulfill the term of the lease they are often held responsible for the rent due for the entire lease whether or not they are living there. Will you be able to fulfill the entire lease? Will you be comfortable living there for a predetermined length of time?

One final aspect to consider is the quality of the property, especially in relation to the price being paid. In addition, researching the reputation and history of the property owner is always a good idea.

While moving can be a stressful time and requires much thought, with proper planning and research one can have an easy move.
