New wireless system to aid in student alerts - Error

I believe that the article intended to quote Mike Erickson from TCS not Mike McRell. Mike Erickson is the Associate VP for Technology and Computing Services.

Re: New wireless system to aid in student alerts - Error

PNC Police got their first real emergency, a chance to test the system, one week before it went online for the entire campus. The heavy snows during the last week of February provided the perfect situation for a true system test. The text message above went out to the cell phones student beta testers.

But, that is how it was intended to work. When the company, Rave Inc., was founded in 2004, there was a need for an alert system for colleges and universities. Many colleges already had bells and sirens, however, there was nothing to warn the students who were on their way to campus, or outside the buildings between classes. Even then, most students didn't know what the sirens meant. The answer to their dilemma was already in students' pockets. It was a cell phone.

"The mobile phone has become like a pair of keys-you never leave home without it," said Raju Rishi, chief strategy officer and co-founder of Rave Wireless Inc. Rishi and his cohorts capitalized on this dependence to create their emergency alert system which is being adopted by colleges throughout the country.

The Rave Alert system works by sending out a simultaneous text message and email to each student registered for the program. The goal is to ensure that students inside, outside, and even those who are on their way to campus know when there is an emergency taking place. The system is being used by colleges and universities as not only an alert to violent attack, but also for school closings, like the snow storm that hit while PNC was testing the system.

Re: New wireless system to aid in student alerts - Error

We are exploring applications of wireless sensor network technology to a range of medical applications, including pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency care, disaster response, and stroke patient rehabilitation (see the related Mercury project as well).

Recent advances in embedded computing systems have led to the emergence of wireless sensor networks, consisting of small, battery-powered "motes" with limited computation and radio communication capabilities. Sensor networks permit data gathering and computation to be deeply embedded in the physical environment. This technology has the potential to impact the delivery and study of resuscitative care by allowing vital signs to be automatically collected and fully integrated into the patient care record and used for real-time triage, correlation with hospital records, and long-term observation.

Wow. its a great move.. It will help students alotThere are, however, some things that you can do to making money on the internet that don't require a lot of time, you don't need any special skills in building web sites, lists, or expensive pay per click

Re: New wireless system to aid in student alerts - Error

Technicians from Time Warner Cable visited our building this afternoon. In assessing the connectivity issue, they found that they needed to request support from colleagues in another division. The good news is that they have placed the service request. The bad news is that we will have to wait until early this coming week for the issue to be fixed. I understand that the Internet outage is terribly inconvenient and hope that you are finding other options workable, whether that means working in the library, with a friend in a different residence hall, or maybe at a coffee shop.
