Emporia State professional advisors announced to students Friday via email that the Kansas Board of Regents has decided not to allow courses to count towards both major and minor credit. The decision is to be effective immediately for students who have declared a minor.
In previous years, ESU has allowed the same course to count for both a student’s academic major and minor credit. This means that students could fulfill their major and minor requirements with the same course.
“A minor is considered a group of classes that are in addition to the major requirements,” advisor Shelby Clark said in an email. Clark advises computer science, accounting and information systems + analytics majors as well as students in the School of Business. “Basically, we cannot use the same class to fulfill two requirements.”
Students with minors who are set to graduate this May will still be able to graduate on-time according to an email sent out by business administration and business education advisor Meghan Williams. While Williams does say the decision will not impact graduation dates, it is unclear whether or not that applies to students who are not graduating at the end of the spring semester.
How exactly the decision will impact students and academic requirements moving forward remains unclear. It is unknown what prompted KBOR’s decision.
