From March 5 through March 7, Emporia State Associated Student Government held their annual election for their Executive Branch and Senate.
In Feb. this year, ASG announced the restructuring of the Senate to reflect the restructuring of ESU’s schools in Executive Order 20-02. The previous structure included representation of the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, School of Business, Graduate School, and The Teachers College. There were also representatives from the freshman class and at-large senators. Beginning with the 24-25 school year, eight of ESU’s ten new schools will be represented in the Senate, as well as the freshman class and at-large student body. The number of senators has increased from 24 to 25.
ASG Election Commissioner Beyonce Tate announced the election results at the Senate meeting on March 7. Elected into the executive branch as president and vice president were sophomore Azwad Arif and junior Piper Glidewell respectively. Arif is a computer science major and currently serves as ASG’s Legislative Director. Glidewell is a senator for the School of Business and is majoring in information systems & analytics.
As for the Senate, the senator-elects are as follows: Emily Rojas for the School of Science & Mathematics; Joel Franz for the School of Business & Technology; Sarah McDonald for the School of Applied Health Sciences; and Lydia Kimble and Kayden Smith for the School of Humanities & Social Sciences.
Each senator position ran uncontested, although some ballots had additional write-ins. The Teachers College had no candidates but received some write-ins, while the School of Visual & Performing Arts and The School of Interdisciplinary Studies had no candidates or write-ins.
“For the write-ins, we will get back to (the Senate) once we check their status and verify (that they will fill the positions),” Tate said.
At-large senators will soon be eligible for appointment according to ASG’s constitution. Other vacant positions can be filled by contacting ASG.
