The Emporia State men’s tennis team hosted Baker University on April 14 at Kossover Tennis Complex in a match of nonconference play. The match also hosted senior day for the Hornets as the team celebrated Harrison Brown, Lleyton Fosha, Hachem Fahem and Sergio Vera before the match began.
No. 1 doubles team Anton Sarunic and Sergio Vera of ESU took a 6-3 win, followed by No. 2 doubles Mostafa Elbasnaly and Harrision Brown who took a dominating 6-0 victory over their Baker opponents. In the final doubles match, Lleyton Fosha and Hachem Fahem would also take a 6-0 win over Baker.
In singles play Sarunic won 6-2 and 6-0, followed by Elbasnaly in the No. 2 spot who went 6-1 and 6-2. Vera, Brown, Fahem, and Fosha would all go on to win their single matches respectively.
Emporia State is now 10-7 on the season while being 1-3 in conference play. The Hornets are currently standing in the No. 4 spot in the north division, while Washburn, Nebraska Kearney and Northwest Missouri round out the top three.
ESU mens tennis will now go on to face off against the Tigers of Cowley Community College at their home court on April 19 in an exhibition match. The Tigers are currently 11-2 overall and undefeated at 3-0 in conference play.
The Hornets will then return for a home match against MIAA foe and division-leading Washburn Ichabods on April 24. The Ichabods are currently 14-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. They also currently hold an impressive 10-0 winning streak after losing their first two matches.
ESU will finish out its regular season games against Southeastern Oklahoma State on April 28 in Durant, Okla. The Storm hold an impressive 18-5 overall record and are 2-1 in conference play. They hold a 10-1 winning record on their home court.
After the conclusion of the match on April 28, the Hornets will then have their sights on the MIAA tennis championships which are set to start on May 1 and play until May 3 in Edmond, Okla.
