In the second game against the University of Central Missouri Mules, Emporia State held off the Mules in eight innings and took the game 15-5 on April 13.
ESU struck first in the third inning of the game off of a grand slam from Kadyn Williams, taking the lead 5-0 going into the top of the fourth. ESU then went on to score seven points in the next two innings compared to UCM who only tallied one point. The Hornets then hit three home runs, one in the seventh and two in the eighth.
The day previous, the Hornets and Mules battled against each other in the first game of the series at Trusler Sports Complex. UCM got bats swinging in the top of the first to score six runs, while ESU tallied one point of their own. UCM would strike again with seven points in the third and three points in the fourth, along with three points in the fourth for ESU.
Going into the fifth inning, UCM would take a large lead with the score at 16-4. The Hornets rallied by scoring one point in each of the final innings, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Mules. UCM went on to take game one with a final score of 21-7.
In the series-determining third game, the Mules would lead the entirety of the game, taking the lead 5-0 going into the bottom of the ninth. ESU attempted to engineer a comeback but only put one point on the scoreboard off of a home run by Williams.
UCM would win the third and final game of the series 5-1.
ESU will head to Hays on April 19 to play against the No. 8 MIAA-ranked Fort Hays State, who currently sit at an overall record of 22-20 and 9-18 in conference play.
