Community members gather on April 5th to view the ESU Art Program’s annual juried student exhibition, “Salon De Refuses”.
Emporia First Friday held its monthly Art Walk on Apr. 5. This month, the art walk featured Emporia State’s Annual Juried Student Exhibition at the Emporia Arts Center.
“I hope that everyone here who has worked on the student show understands what a big deal this is,” said Kallia Mock, Executive Director of Emporia First Friday. “This is a nationally recognized and respected art gallery, and so you should be very proud of yourselves.”
Kicking off the event’s awards was the 6th Annual Sticker Design Competition. Taking first place was ESU junior graphic design major Darroh Sokolov.
“The design had been in my head for months, almost a year,” Sokolov said. “It was either that or a sticker of a cat, and me being someone who always had an interest in the macabre and morality, I was going to draw this design.”
“At first, I decided to go for a simplistic approach and use Illustrator, but I didn’t like how it turned out,” Sokolov went on to say about the design process. “So I switched to my usual illustrative style which is influenced by comic books.”
Michaela Karr, an instructor in the English & Modern Languages program at ESU, was awarded second place and third place was awarded to Destiny Lynn Kay. The People’s Choice Award, an award voted on by the community, was given to Hannah Worthen.
The award ceremony continued, awarding scholarships to numerous incoming and current ESU art students.
The winning stickers are available at Trox Gallery and Gifts.
