Emporia State volleyball claimed the victory against Fort Hays State in a four set match on Nov. 8 at White Auditorium.
The Hornets had four attack errors in the first set, allowing Fort Hays to lead 12-6 midway through the set. ESU fought back and went on a 12-4 scoring run to take the lead, making the score 18-16. ESU held the lead and won the first set, 25-22.
The second set consisted of eight ties and three lead changes, until ESU eventually tied the score 20-20 by a pair of kills from senior outside hitter Weronika Wrzesinka. ESU was outscored 5-1 in the remaining points of the set, failing to claim the win.
The third set was back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than three points throughout the set. ESU held set point twice until the Tigers scored two straight points giving them the advantage 26-25. With kills from Wrzesinka and junior hitter Camilla Ossola, Emporia was able to regain the lead. Ossola assisted with two more kills to allow ESU to win the set 29-27, after a service error that tied the set 27-27. The Hornets led 2-1 in the match at the end of the third.
The Hornets continued the momentum in set four as they went on a 10-5 scoring run, forcing the Tigers to take a timeout. Following the timeout, the Tigers responded and lessened the gap, making the score 11-9. The Hornets answered with a 6-2 scoring run, building a 17-11 advantage. The Hornets remained in the lead the rest of the set and won the final set 25-19.
ESU hit .286 in attack, their fourth-highest mark of the season. As a team, the Hornets had a season high 69 assists in the match.
ESU volleyball will be back in action against Arkansas-Fort Smith in Fort Smith, Ark. on Friday, Nov. 15. at 6:00 p.m.
