Emporia State volleyball won against Pittsburg State University on Oct. 4 at William L. White Auditorium.
In the beginning the Hornets started off slow, giving the Gorillas a five point lead. The Hornets would later bring the score to a tie 7-7 before the score closed in at 18-16 favoring the Gorillas late in the match. The Hornets continued to fight and tied the score again at 19-19 before racking up additional points to beat the Gorillas 27-25 in the first set.
The Hornets continued to outscore the Gorillas, going on to beat them 25-16 in the second set. For much of the third set, ESU continued their momentum of the match scoring ahead of the Gorillas. Pitt State fought back and managed to get one point behind ESU, 23-22. With consecutive kills from senior outside hitter Weronika Wrzesinska, ESU beat Pitt-State 25-22 in the third and final set.
ESU sat at a .320 hitting percentage during the match, a current season high. Senior outside hitter Weronika Wrzesinska led kills for the Hornets at 29, the most in the nation for a three-set match this season. Freshman outside hitter Rayishon Jackman managed to get off eight kills to help the Hornets win the match; senior middle/right side hitter McKenya Sorrells and junior outside/right side hitter Camilla Ossola also helped the Hornets in kills, both with six overall. It was sophomore setter Brailee Bogle’s third time this season with 40 or more assists in a three-set match, tallying up exactly 40 against the Gorillas.
The Hornets went on to take the match against the Newman Jets 3-0 the following Saturday.
