Emporia State University’s School of Nursing received $500,000 from Newman Regional Health on Dec 27th for a simulation hospital that will be situated on the third floor of the new Nursing and Wellness building. The investment will go toward state of the art equipment, as well as toward capital construction costs for the $22 million dollar building.
The simulation hospital will include five simulation labs: an adult care training lab, adult care simulation room, obstetric simulation training lab, emergency care simulation room and pediatric care simulation room, as well as high-fidelity mannequins for students to practice on, including one in the obstetric lab that gives birth.
The labs will take up the majority of the third floor which will also include a student success center, classrooms, and a commons space. Utilizing the hospital’s simulation technology will allow students to receive hands-on healthcare experiences in a safe environment. The simulation hospital will also allow students to gain experience at clinical sites for training toward the end of their program.
ESU’s nursing program has operated partially at Newman Regional Health’s campus for over 100 years. The new nursing building and simulation hospital will allow the nursing program to function fully on the ESU campus. “
This investment will bring the nursing program to the heart of Kansas,” said Amy Piersol, Director of Development at the Emporia State University Foundation. “This new facility will increase the number of labs, and faculty have also been involved in the planning process of what the building will look like and how it will be used for instruction… we really are grateful to have Newman Regional Health’s support for the project.”
The simulation hospital will bear the name of Newman Regional Health in recognition of the gift.
ESU is still seeking final gifts and pledges for the project. Those who wish to contribute are encouraged to contact the ESU Foundation for more information on how to help at 620-341-5440 or [email protected].
