I’m sure you’ve heard the chaotic melody of trills, squawks and chirps emitted from trees and shrubs the past few weeks. The birds are back and boy, are they hungry.
When I came to college, I paid no attention to birds; I saw them as drones that purposefully shat on my windshield out of spite. Now, at the ripe-old age of 25, birds are my best friends.
In my yard I have four bird feeders which provide a smorgasbord of seeds, nuts and berries for my avian amigos. Every day I look out my window and I see house finches, cardinals and the occasional downy woodpecker gorging themselves. Birds bring so much joy to my life and I think they will bring joy to yours.
The only materials needed to gain admittance to the world of birds are bird seed and a feeder. Simply hang a bird feeder in view of a window or sprinkle seeds on your patio or terrace and wait. After a few hours, or possibly minutes, one or two curious birds will investigate the new addition to their environment and call to their friends that dinner has been served.
If you are consistent with your feeding schedule, more and more birds will, literally and figuratively, flock to the feeder. Every day or two, I attract a new species. For instance, a couple days ago I caught a glimpse of a tufted titmouse, a small blue and white song bird with a ‘tuft’ of feathers on the back of its head.
I’ve found that when I gaze at birds chowing down, I instantly feel less stressed and anxious. Birds literally don’t have a care in the world; all they want to do is eat and fornicate. Birds don’t have to worry about finishing their thesis by April 14th; birds don’t have three jobs and a fraternity to worry about. Birds live the life I want.
When I look out my window, for just a moment, I feel as free as a bird. You should get a bird feeder.
