Cowboy boots, line dancing, dirt, old windmills, a banjo. Those are all of the things I pictured as I listened to the first album on Apple Music by Steel Skarecrow.
I saw flashbacks of the new version of “Footloose” when they danced to “Fake ID.” I imagined sitting in the Solutions North Bank Pavillion at night in the summer during the county free fair from back home. I have never heard of this band before, but they would fit in well there. A nice summer night with a slight breeze and super loud live music plays as people from all over sit on the benches.
Originally I felt like the band had a nineties country sound with a mix of something else, but I just couldn’t put my finger on it, so I looked them up.
“Steel Skarecrow combines nineties country and southern soul with a modern feel to produce a unique sound, while maintaining their country roots,” according to their website. “Each song tells a story, with top notch musicianship and three part harmonies.”
I like the band. I won’t be listening to them frequently, but “Kathy Lives on California Avenue” and their cover of Love and Theft’s “Runaway” will be making my playlist.
The “Steel Skarecrow” album is my favorite. It’s better because it’s more of a fun dancing beat. I think it gives them a distinct sound. Their first album is “Chasin’ the Sunset.” It’s good, but personally, it’s not my cup of tea and I wouldn’t listen to it again. I would recommend the band, especially to nineties country music people or to swing dancers.
As a college student, who occasionally goes out on weekends with friends, I wouldn’t want to listen to this band. Saturday nights are precious to college students. It gives us time to unwind and relax from the week. It allows us to be young, reckless and enjoy our friends.
Many students have made the comments that they don’t always enjoy the bands at Bourbon because they want to dance.
I am not saying you can’t dance to Skarecrow, because you definitely can. Like I said above, I immediately pictured dancing. Swing dancing would be so much fun for this band. That being said, I don’t find many Emporia State students enjoying country music or that kind of dancing. I have no data to back my claim, I just know what I have seen and heard.
If I was an adult just going to Bourbon, or even a different bar, for a drink this band is perfect. In theory Bourbon Cowboy is an ideal venue for this band. After all, Bourbon is a country bar. If I was older just going with my significant other or ladies night, I would 100% put my boots and jeans on then go.
Bourbon is probably the most popular college bar because it accepts all ages, but not every college kid enjoys country music or even live music. However, they will go because it’s the only place they can get in.
My favorite songs were “Kathy Lives on California Avenue,” “The Penny” and “Thinkin’ Bout You.”
Apple Music has their song “Chasin’ the Sunset,” from their second album, as their number one song. It’s good, I literally can’t say a bad thing about it other than it’s just not something I would listen to.
