After two years of keeping their distance due to COVID-19, Emporia State a cappella choir is bringing back singing valentines and including a virtual option.
On Feb. 14, Emporia State’s 39 a capella singers will be going out in groups of five to deliver valentines throughout the day. However, in-person deliveries are not the only option. Chamber Choir is preparing a virtual E-card that will digitally open to a recording of the group singing in people’s email inboxes, according to Joshua Donaldson, interim choral director.
“I think it’s just a really great way to still stay connected to people who aren’t just in our community,” Donaldson said.
Sam Conrad Jr. music education major and a capella social media officer has been helping to advertise the valentines.
“I’m really excited to be able to go out and just share a little bit of music with the community,” Conrad said. “I think that since COVID-19, everybody’s been kind of missing that aspect of being able to just have fun. I think that it’ll just bring a lot of light to the community.”
Prices are $5 for an E-card, $20 for an in-person performance with a rose and $25 for an in-person performance with a rose and chocolate, according to the university choir’s Facebook page. This year’s chosen song is “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction.
“I just like getting people excited about it,” Conrad said. “I’m like ‘Hey you should do this, you should buy this, you should embarrass your friends, get a loved one, do whatever you want to do with them.’”
Valentines will only be delivered in public spaces on campus and inside city limits. There is a “cap” set on how many can be purchased, according to Donaldson. Only 120 are available and can be ordered online at emporiastatetickets.universitytickets.com before they sell out.
