The Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity released an official statement Wednesday following the arrest of now-expelled member Caden Hunt.
Hunt, 20, was arrested Nov. 28 by the Emporia Police Department following the execution of a search warrant at the Sigma Tau Gamma residence at 1309 Sylvan St. At the residence, police located marijuana, cocaine, and LSD as well as a firearm. The warrant and subsequent arrest come after Hunt allegedly sold officers marijuana, cocaine, and LSD during their month-long targeted operation into the selling of controlled substances.
In the official statement from the fraternity obtained by The Bulletin, the organization said it condemns the behaviors exhibited by Hunt.
“Sigma Tau Gamma headquarters condemns the behaviors demonstrated by a recently expelled member on November 28, 2023 at Emporia State University,” the fraternity’s official statement said. “Upon learning of the incident, both Sigma Tau Gamma headquarters and the Delta Chapter responded with swift and immediate action.”
The Delta Chapter is the Sigma Tau Gamma chapter at Emporia State.
“The conduct exhibited by the former member is not tolerated under any circumstances, and has no place in Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the chapter submitted an application to remove Hunt from any affiliation with Sigma Tau Gamma. The application was then approved by the Chief Executive Officer and fraternity headquarters as well as ESU Fraternity and Sorority Life were notified.
“As we state in our official response the conduct exhibited by the former member is not tolerated and we have responded to the situation with swift and immediate action that resulted in expulsion from the Fraternity,” said ESU Sigma Tau Gamma President Joel Franz in an email to The Bulletin.
The organization’s statement indicates that both Sigma Tau Gamma headquarters and the ESU chapter support any actions taken against Hunt by the University and local law enforcement.
Hunt remains in Lyon County Jail without bond.
