On Nov. 4, Emporia honored Veterans and those who serve in the military with the 20th annual Freedom Fest. Over the years, the event has grown from just a 5k run to a regional event.
Multiple events took place throughout the day and each event had special prizes. All participants had the opportunity to earn challenge coins and participants in the Freedom Run could earn gift cards. Spurs were awarded for the Spur Ride and custom trophies for the Freedom Ride.
“We honor and recognize five age categories. You can also run or walk in honor of your favorite service Member,” organizers of the festival wrote.
The biggest event is the Freedom Ride, which consists of two tracks that the participants can pick between: the 20 mile Timmerman Ride or the 50 mile Eisenhower Ride. North Lyon County, Emporia, and South Lyon County Veterans Memorials benefit from the net revenues of the Eisenhower and Timmerman rides.
The Flint Hills Technical College Welding Program created customized bike and military parts prizes for the top riders.
Also part of Freedom Fest is “The Norwegian Foot March.” It is a 30K foot march for military members and civilians. The march can last for up to 6 hours and after successfully finishing, participants receive Norwegian Foot March pins for their completion.
