2023 inductee David Allbritton receives his award for his time on the Emporia State baseball team from 2010-11.
On Friday, Oct. 27, Emporia State athletes gathered in the Memorial Union to celebrate their accomplishments from various decades in the university’s sports history. ESU hosted an induction ceremony and awarded its top athletes with a place in The Hall of Honor.
The 2023 inductees consist of 10 people and the 2006 ESU Softball team. Each inductee holds an impressive record, such as Mike Plunkett who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers and went 10-7 in the minors during the 1971 season or Mel Mayo, who led the mile relay team to hold a school record time that stood for 37 years.
The 2006 ESU Softball team were inducted into the Hall of Honor for their historic 2006 season. The team won 62 games and advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Game. The monumental season also included a winning streak of 21 games, a regular-season championship, and an MIAA Tournament title.
Trish Bahr, Women’s Track & Field inductee into the Hall of Honor, broke the ESU record in high jump both indoors and outdoors. She said that she had gotten the phone call about the induction from Coach Stanbrough around a month ago.
“I was really surprised. It wasn’t an honor that I expected because we had so many great athletes…” Bahr said. “But it was really pretty seamless once I received the phone call and I got all the information. It was wonderful.”
When asked if she would like to give a piece of advice to the current athletes ready to graduate, Bahr said, “Keep in touch with your friends that you meet…This is an awesome time in your life, and you don’t want to let it go.”
