Emporia State women’s soccer faced off against Rogers State on Oct. 1 at Emporia High School due to an unplayable home field at the ESU soccer pitch.
The Hornets entered the game against the Hillcats after a fresh win against Northeastern State on Sept. 29 with a final score of 2-0. Senior midfielder Kyleigh Roe and graduate assistant forward Alexis Cole both tallied a point to secure a win for the Hornets against the RiverHawks.
Not even a minute into play against the Hillcats the Hornets took a 1-0 lead with a goal from senior midfielder Angela Palmer and an assist from graduate assistant midfielder Hannah Woolery. In the 11th minute of play, ESU struck again with a goal from graduate assistant forward Mackenzie Dimarco, assisted by Angela Palmer. The Hornets scored once more late in the first half with a goal by junior forward Haley Sparks who was assisted by Paige Putter.
The Hornets went scoreless in the second half of play, and ESU’s defense also held the Hillcats scoreless. The Hornets came out on top 3-0 at the conclusion of the game.
ESU Women’s Soccer has yet to lose against the Hillcats; in the last meeting between the Hillcats and the Hornets, the game ended with a 1-1 tie in Claremore, OK. So far this season, the Hornets average a total of 14 goals compared to the rest of the MIAA conference with just 11 goals. The Hornets have also put up a total of 131 shots so far, compared to a respectable 118 average for the rest of the MIAA.
The Hornets are now 3-4-3 on the season and on a two-game win streak. They will face the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, MO on Oct. 6. Kickoff against the Bearcats is set for 3:00 p.m.
The Bearcats are 3-4-4 on the season and set at a ranking of #11 in a recent MIAA poll. ESU will have another away game against Missouri Western State on Oct. 8 before returning home to face Central Missouri on Oct. 13.
The Jennies of Central Missouri have an impressive record of 7-2-1 and are ranked in the number three spot in a recent MIAA poll. The Hornets and Jennies faced each other a total of three times in the 2022 season in which two of the wins went to ESU while one game went in favor of UCM. Kickoff against the Jennies is scheduled for 3:00 P.M. on Oct. 13.
