The ongoing construction to Union Square has become a nearly unavoidable observation to students going to and from the Union. Now, students won’t have to wonder when the daily construction will conclude.
“(The construction) is scheduled to be finished by Homecoming,” said Omar Herrera, the Facility Planner Project Manager on campus.
According to Herrera, the most challenging part of the construction was coordinating the project itself. Originally, the project was to be completed before the first day of school.
The upgrade is part of the 2015 Campus Masterplan and will include charging stations, more comfortable seating, shading, more outlets and landscaping. It will also include a water feature, expanded seating, and lighting to enhance space, according to the university’s Internal Communication Portal for Faculty and Staff.
Funding for the project came from Dr. Ray and Robin Feltner. The portal indicates that their goal with the donation is “to beautify the space and make it more welcoming to students, staff + faculty, and visitors.”
When looking at future projects to come and what would stop another project from being accomplished, Executive Director of Facilities William McKernan said “It’s just priority.”
Students can be updated on the progress of the construction through Hornet Announcements.
