Housing for winter break is available for students who need to spend any time in their dorm room between 12 p.m. on Dec. 16 and 12 p.m. on Jan. 14.
The application for 2023-24 winter housing is available on Hornet 365 through the ResLife Portal until Monday, Dec. 4. The housing fee is $290 to cover each day of the break and will be charged to the applicant’s student account. In order to be considered, the applicant must be enrolled for the spring semester and in good standing with Residential Life.
If a student needs to apply for winter break housing after Dec. 4, they can talk to a Residential Life staff member about getting the application reopened for them.
During the break, certain resources will be available for students despite most of the University being closed.
“I would definitely encourage students to call our duty phone if they need any assistance or get locked out,” said Kayla Smith, director of Residential Life Administration. “We’ll have our main office open when the University’s open for mail, police and safety is a resource if students need anything during the break, and we’ll have our custodial and maintenance staff here to support (students) too. The Rec Center is going to be open that first week after we close and then (reopen) the week after or the week of January 8, and they’ll be open in the afternoon.”
The cafeteria will be closed but kitchens in the dorm buildings will be available for students to use throughout the break. Students are encouraged to take food and hygiene items from Corky’s Cupboard before campus closes.
For students who lack means of transportation, the Lyon County Area Transit (LCAT) bus will travel between Plumb Hall and Walmart at their usual times between Monday and Friday. Times can be found on the Lyon County website.
This year marks the third year that Residential Life has offered winter break housing in the dorms to students. Previously on the dates between housing contracts, (Dec. 16 through Jan. 14), residence halls were closed completely and students were relocated to apartments.
