The Lady Hornets softball team played a doubleheader against Southwest Missouri State, winning 9-1 and 7-3, as Stephanie Goodwin, senior outfielder, broke the all-time doubles record with 65 doubles.
“I mean that is a good thing, but I’m working toward the end of the season, so I am trying to get my head right for the team to make it all the way,” Goodwin said.
Kaitlyn Caston, senior pitcher, was given the start against the Lions in the first game, pitching with a 9-2 record and a 2.84 ERA this season.
The Lady Hornets got on the board first by a base hit from Goodwin that managed to score a runner from third home. After an RBI by Caston, Danielle Sprinkle, freshman infielder, bombed a two run home run to make it 4-0 for the Lady Hornets at the bottom of the first.
The Lady Lions were soon on the board after a home run that pushed them to trail by three in the top of the second. Two scoreless innings were soon to follow until the Hornets loaded up the bases which helped them score two more runs making it 6-1 at the end of the fourth.
Caston gave up four hits, one earned run and six strikeouts against the Lions in the first game. The Lady Hornets managed to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth to mercy rule the Lions winning the first game of the series.
“Coach says get ahead early work the pitches that I can, which getting ahead really worked for me,” Caston said.
Zordel started the second game of the series scoring a run after stealing third base to put the score at 4-0.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Hornets managed to score in the bottom of the fourth when Goodwin broke the all time school record for the most doubles in a career by hitting a RBI double followed by another RBI double by Jessica Gragg, senior catcher, to make the score 6-0 at the end of the fourth.
“Well, obviously, for Steph, I’m ecstatic for her,” said Julie LeMaire, head coach. “It’s such a special thing for a kid to leave a mark on a program. She’s done it in so many ways, and today is one of the ways to get yourself in the book.”
The Lady Lions managed to score two runs, but the Lady Hornets answered back to make a final of 7-3 sweep of the Lady Lions.
The softball team travels to Southwest Baptist University for double header starting at 1 p.m, Friday, April 3, at Bolivar, Missouri.
