The Emporia State track and field squad had a busy weekend last weekend, as ESU hosted its annual multi-meet on April 9 and 10.
The multimet consisted of heptathlon and decathlon athletes only, competing in those events. Those who were not in the multi-meet traveled to Wichita to compete in the annual K.T. Woodman track meet, hosted by Wichita State.
“I thought both meets went really well,” said Steve Blocker, head coach. “Our multievent athletes did really well and I thought we had a strong showing at WSU as well.”
Payson Maydew, junior, won the decathlon, with 6,982 points. The decathlon consisted of 10 events, including the 100-meter dash, long jump, high jump, 1500-meter run, discus throw, the shot put the javelin throw, pole vault and the 110-meter high hurdles.
The heptathlon had a strong showing from ESU athletes as well. Monica Howard, sophomore, finished second with 4,241 points. Sophie Hayes, freshman, finished fifth with 4,049 points and Brianna Schmidts, freshman, finished seventh with 3,863 points. The heptathlon consisted of seven events, the 100-meter hurdles, the long jump, high jump, 200-meter run, 800-meter run and shot put.
“I think the meet went really well,” Monica Howard said. “It was a good start for the multi, we just have to keep looking to improve and score better at conference.”
The rest of the team competed at the annual K.T. Woodman track meet on April 10 11 in Wichita. The team saw three provisional marks get added to their list. Maggie Wilson, senior, got a third place finish with a jump of 3.65-meter in the pole vault. Peyton Weiss, senior, long jumped 5.8-meter to grab a third place finish. Sarah Dunkin Beam, senior, threw the javelin 40.87-meters which was good for eighth place. The best finish for the Hornets came when Ethridge won the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.32.
“It went well,” Etheridge said. “It was pretty windy out, so under those conditions I thought it went well. We had a lot of great performances.”
Other notable performances were Ryan Dickson finishing 19th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.98. There were two Hornets finished in the top 20 in the 400-meter dash, Colin Coleman, junior, and Cody Miller, senior. Two Hornets had top 10 finishes in discus. Nick Klenda, senior, finished sixth and Alec Garcia finished 10th.
On the women’s side, Morgan Gilliland, sophomore, finished eighth in shot put, and Dominique Staatz, junior, finished 12th in the 400-meter dash. The ESU A squad finished seventh in the 4×100-meter relay with a time of 48.05 seconds. Catalina Bissell, sophomore finished sixth in the women’s pole vault.
The Hornets and Lady Hornets will both be in action this weekend. They will be at the Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kansas.
