The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is putting together its third annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Emporia community members. The walk will take place at Jones Park from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26.
“Our walks are a place for not only those who have lost a loved one to suicide, but to those who have friends who have attempted, (and) are attempt survivors themselves,” said Melissa Kurtenbach, chairperson. “As well as recognizing those who have struggled in the past and who may still be struggling.”
The event will feature a 19-year-old speaker who will talk about her experience with attempted suicide. There will also be opportunities for face painting, raffle prizes and balloon animals. Homemade ice cream and baked good will be available as well.
Participants will get an opportunity to talk to others who have gone through similar experiences with attempted suicide. Participants will also receive a bead of a certain color that will signal their particular issue so they can speak to others wearing the same colors.
“It is a safe place to speak about mental health and to show support for one another,” Kurtenbach said. “Our walk is a symbol of hope that things can get better and that they are not alone.”
Students can register at outofthedarkness.org or at the walk. Registration for the walk is free. If students are unable to make it, they can still register at outofthedarkness.org and be a “virtual walker.”
Between 250-300 people are expected to participate this year.
