In light of the March On Emporia on Sept. 15, I have decided to introduce a TV series that some of my fellow Emporia State students may or may not know about.
“The Boondocks” is an American adult animated sitcom based on Aaron McGruder’s comic strip of the same name. The series debuted and originally aired on Cartoon Network’s late-night programming block, Adult Swim in 2005. Most might recognize Adult Swim for its airing of popular raunchy series such as, “Family Guy,” “Robot Chicken,” or “Black Jesus,” but “The Boondocks” is definitely one of the few Adult Swim classics.
Ultimately, the show revolves around a black family, the Freemans, who have recently settled in a fictional, peaceful, and mostly white suburb. “The Boondocks” serves as a satire and comedy that offers a very interesting perspective on the mixture of cultures, lifestyles, social classes, stereotypes and racism.
Besides the show itself, there are many great and maybe even surprising actors who are a part of the cast. Regina King plays the voice for both Riley and Huey Freeman, and John Witherspoon plays Robert Freeman, better known as, Grandad. Gary Anthony Williams plays the infamous Uncle Ruckus, and Cedric Yarbrough voices for the Tom Dubois character, who most refer to as the “Uncle Tom” of the series.
Together, all of these characters have formed some of the most comical, controversial and memorable scenes in the history of television.
Though “The Boondocks” ended on June 23, 2014 with four seasons and 55 episodes, the series has begun to air in syndication outside the United States and has been released on DVD. Also, for those faithful lovers of binge watching Netflix series, the show has recently been added there as well.
So, add “The Boondocks” to the watch list and binge away.
