Emporia State track and field visited the University of Central Missouri on Friday, with the men’s track and field team winning the meet by placing top two in 11 out of 16 events.
The men were behind 71-45 to the Mules with six events to go. Cody Miller, senior, Luke Stenzel, freshman, and Alex Skinner, senior, placing in the top five for the 600 meter run giving the Hornets 16 points.
In the 200 meter and 800 meter runs, ESU took back-to-back first places to claim the lead. In the 3000 meter the Mules had three people place for 18 points but Jacob Bull, senior, placed second to tie with the Mules for a total of 99 points with two relays left.
The Mules took a 109-107 lead by winning the mile relay but the Hornets won the distance medley by finishing at the slimmest of margins to give them the championship of the UCM invitational out of seven teams.
On the woman’s side, Carmen King, senior, lead ESU to two first places in the 60 meter dash and 200 meter dash. She was also runner-up in the long jump. The women placed third out of eight teams that day.
The team travels to the Jayhawk Classic competing against 20 different teams starting at 9 a.m. on Friday in Lawrence.
