Emporia State softball wrapped up tournament play last weekend at the St. Cloud Indoor Tournament in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
The Hornets swept day one, beating previously undefeated St. Cloud 2-1 and run-ruling the Huskies 10-1 in game two.
In game one, ESU scored a run in the second inning with a single up the middle to score Sarah Glass, senior infielder. The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Marly Carmona, junior infielder, stole home. St. Cloud scored their single run in the fifth inning, getting a chance to take the lead in the seventh with the bases loaded, but were unable to come through.
In game two of the day, the Hornets plated three runs the first inning. ESU went on to score two more in the third and four in the fifth en route to a 10-1 run-rule victory.
The Hornets split day two with Sioux Falls under the dome. ESU was shut out 3-0 in game one but came back to take a 4-1 victory to cap the day.
The Cougars took an early 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer. The Hornets had base runners in four of the last five innings, but could not get enough hits to bring them in.
ESU came out in front with an RBI single in the second inning during game two. The Hornets capped their scoring with a two-run double in the sixth, giving them a 4-1 lead and eventual victory.
On their final day of action in the Huskie Dome, ESU was swept by Minnesota-Duluth. The Hornets gave up a walk-off 4-3 loss in game one and lost game two 4-2 to close out the tournament.
The Hornets will begin MIAA play next weekend with doubleheaders against Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern at Trusler Sports Complex. First pitch against the Gorillas is set for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 10.
