The Hornet softball team finished the weekend undefeated by sweeping a doubleheader over Lincoln on Saturday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex. Emporia State defeated the Blue Tigers 8-3 in the first game and run ruled them 12-1 in five innings in the second.
ESU started the first game off strong by scoring all eight of their runs in the first three innings. Sarah Glass, senior infielder, gave the Hornets their first run when she sent Caitlin VanVleck, junior outfielder, home on a double to left in the bottom of the first. A wild pitch scored Glass later that inning to increase the lead to 2-0 after one.
VanVleck doubled to left center plating two more runs in the second to put Emporia State up 4-0. Annelise Rockley, junior outfielder, singled to right field, sending VanVleck home to stretch the margin to 5-0 after two.
Glass smashed a lead-off triple to left center then scored on a Blue Tiger’s error in the bottom of the third. Two more Lincoln errors scored Cassidy Berry, junior outfielder, to put Emporia State up 7-1. Katy Rae Nordman, junior infielder, hit an RBI single to score the final run for the Hornets as ESU pitching held down the Lincoln offense in the remainder of the game.
The Hornets started off strong again in game two, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Emporia State added three runs on just one hit in the second inning when a wild pitch plated Glass and Berry hit a two-run homer to left field. Lincoln scored their only run in the top of the third before Emporia State tacked on a run in both the bottom of the third and fourth for the run rule victory.
