The #30 Hornet baseball team opened conference play with an 11-0 run-rule win over Pittsburg State on Saturday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Emporia State scored one run in the first off a Pittsburg State error. The teams went scoreless the next two innings until the Hornets opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs. Mason Brown, junior catcher, added to his RBI total in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left field plating two runs, making it a ten-run game. Wade Hanna, senior outfielder, added one more run with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth to make it 11-0.
The Hornets completed day two of the series with a 13-8 victory on Sunday afternoon. A seven-run third inning propelled Emporia State to the win, led by Kaden Shaffer, junior infielder, with seven RBI’s.
Emporia State completed their sweep of Pittsburg State with an 8-6 win Monday afternoon. Junior infielder Tate Kastens went three for four with two runs while Shaffer had two RBIs on the day. Sophomore starter Tanner Cairns tossed 5.0 innings, allowing only three runs on five hits with five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Hornets (10-2, 3-0 in the MIAA) will travel to Quincy, Illinois to face Quincy University in a three-game series this weekend. They will start with a double-header this Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
