Last weekend, the #13 Emporia State baseball team traveled to Quincy, Illinois for a three-game series against Quincy University. The Hornets started day one by splitting a doubleheader, falling 8-7 in game one and dominating game two with a 19-7 victory.
In game one, the Hawks took an early lead in the first inning by plating a run. Quincy would score two more runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, junior infielder Tate Kastens singled to right field to score Kaden Shaffer, junior infielder, to close the gap 3-1. Two more runs scored to tie the game at 3 before a single to left field from senior infielder Alex White brought Ryan McBroom, senior infielder, home to give the Hornets a 4-3 advantage.
The Hawks scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Quincy plated four more runs to take the lead 8-4. McBroom hit a two-run homer to bring the score to. A sacfly got the Hornets within one in the top of the ninth, but they were unable to score any further, giving Quincy game one with an 8-7 win.
Emporia State opened up game two with a six-run first inning then dominated the second inning with seven more runs, giving them a 13-1 lead after two. The Hornets had another five runs in the sixth inning to cap a 19-7 win over Quincy.
The Hornets finished game three with eight runs in the ninth to help them secure a 14-2 win over Quincy on Sunday afternoon. ESU took the series 2-1 and improved to 13-3 overall on the year.
Because of the windy conditions, Emporia State has rescheduled their game with Newman, originally scheduled for Wednesday, to March 15 at 5 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.
