Last Thursday, Emporia State had two provisional qualifiers and three top three finishers at the 90th Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kansas.
Monica Howard, senior multi-event specialist, got the day started by placing third overall in the Heptathlon with a provisional qualifying score of 4,720 points. Jazmin Williams, freshman jumper, was the other provisional qualifier for the Hornets. She jumped 19-03.50 to place second in the women’s long jump.
Peter Mascal, junior jumper, finished third in the men’s long jump with a career best 22-08.00.
Luke Stenzel, junior sprinter, had the top finish on the track for the ESU men. He ran a career best 1:53.80 to finish fifth in the men’s unseeded 800m. Jared Reinke, freshman middle distance, joined him in the top ten of the event, running 1:55.00 to place ninth.
Alec Garcia, junior thrower, and Canien Burnett, freshman high jumper, both had top ten finishes for the Hornets. Garcia was tenth at 55-10.00 in the men’s shot put while Burnett cleared 6-06.75 to place tenth in the men’s high jump.
The men’s 4X800m relay picked up a championship and the Hornets advanced to the finals in five events to highlight Friday’s action.
ESU now has the ninth-ranked men’s 800m group in the nation at Division II. The foursome of Thomas LaRoche, junior distance runner, Cole Bosley, sophomore distance runner, Murad Baheyadeen, freshman middle distance, and Reinke ran 7:42.27 to capture the championship in the 4X800m relay. In addition to this win, the Hornets qualified for Saturday’s finals in the women’s 4X100m relay and 4X400m relay and men’s 4X400m relay.
Taysean Goodwin, sophomore sprinter, turned in a provisional qualifying time of 47.69 in the men’s 400m and was the top time going into Saturday’s finals.
Wyatt Sander, junior multi-event specialist, ran a provisional time of 54.16 in the men’s 400m hurdles to advance to Saturday’s finals.
The ESU women’s 4X100m relay team and thrower Alec Garcia won championships as the Hornets picked up three provisional qualifiers at two different meets on Saturday.
Hornet track and field will be at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa this weekend. Events begin Thursday afternoon and last until Saturday.
