Emporia State had one event champion and three qualifiers for Saturday’s finals during the Friday night portion of the MIAA-NSIC Challenge in Marysville, Missouri.
During the Saturday finals, the Hornets had two event champions, six runner-up finishes and four provisional qualifiers at two separate meets.
Taysean Goodwin, sophomore sprinter, captured the 200m with a provisional time of 21.34. Canien Burnett, freshman, cleared 6-08.00 to place fifth in the men’s high jump qualifying, and Aaron Taylor, sophomore, ran a 15.43.17 to win the 5000m championship.
Three of ESU’s runner-up finishes came in the relays. Malcolm Dade, freshman, Goodwin, Jamal Curry, sophomore, and Jordan Reed, sophomore, ran 41.25 in the men’s 4X100m relay while Parker Evans, sophomore sprinter, Thomas LaRoche, junior distance runner, Wyatt Sander, junior multi-event specialist, and Murad Beheyadeen, freshman middle distance runner, clocked in at 13.17.12 in the 4X400m relay. Sander also finished second in the 400m hurdle with a time of 55.27.
In women’s competitions, Latiyera Yeargin, junior, Hannah Shield, sophomore, Malacia Lee, junior, and Jazmin Williams, freshman, ran a 47.15 in the 4X100m relay. Elizabeth Blevins, senior, was second in the 400m running a 56.79 and Emily Schoenfeld, senior, ran an 18.34.79 to finish second in the 5000m run. Sarah Hines, sophomore, finished fourth with a personal best of 14.36 in the 100m hurdles.
Competing without their throwers, the Hornet men finished fourth in the team standings at the MIAA-NSIC Challenge while the women finished fifth.
The throwers were in Bolivar, Missouri competing in the Southwest Baptist Invitational on Saturday and picked up two provisional qualifiers, both by junior Alec Garcia.
Garcia moved to fifth on the Emporia State all-time list with a mark of 55-02.25 in the shot put, a mark which also ranked 15th nationally. He added a provisional qualifier with a throw of 162-06 in the discus.
The Hornets will travel to Wichita this weekend for the KT Woodman Classic.
