Emporia State split a doubleheader with Washburn last Saturday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex in the first Turnpike Tussle series this season. The Hornets took game one 7-1 and lost game two 3-0.
Emporia State was able to bring in two runs in the bottom of the second in game one after Annie Rockley, junior outfielder, doubled to left center. The third inning did not look promising as Washburn retired the first two Hornet batters; however, the Hornets would rally to add to their lead. After two walks, a single from junior infielder Hailey Cope loaded the bases. Katie Yoakum, junior infielder, singled through the right side to bring in two runs and extend Emporia’s lead 4-0.
After Valeria Kinney, sophomore designated hitter, scored on an Ichabod error to give ESU a 5-0 lead, Rockley earned another RBI with a single through the right side. The teams went scoreless through the fourth and fifth inning until they scored a run each in the sixth to cap the scoring and put the game at 7-1.
Emporia State was shut out in game two, connecting for just three hits. Washburn took a quick 1-0 lead in the first and scored their two more in the fifth. Holly Hinkle, junior, pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three runs off six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Eryn Stockman, senior, relieved for 2.1 innings, allowing two hits with no walks.
The Hornets (23-17, 8-4 in the MIAA) will host Fort Hays State in a doubleheader this Friday starting at 4 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.
