The #9 Emporia State baseball team ended last weekend’s three-game road series against Central Oklahoma 1-2.
For just the second time this year the Hornets lost a series opener, falling 9-6 last Thursday in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Central Oklahoma scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the first before Emporia State answered with five runs in the top of the second. The Bronchos answered the Hornet rally by plating three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game 5-5. UCO retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the last coming on a double steal. The Bronchos went on to add two more in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game.
For the first time this year the Hornets lost consecutive games, dropping their second in a row with a 4-3 loss on Friday afternoon. For the second straight day the Bronchos got on the board first, scoring a run on an attempted double steal in the first.
UCO plated an unearned run in the third inning to go up 2-0. Emporia State scored their first runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game 2-2. The Hornets went up 3-2 on junior outfielder Mack Gowing’s sac fly that scored Ryan McBroom, senior infielder. UCO answered with another run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, then scored their final run in the seventh to take the victory.
Emporia State salvaged the last game of the series, taking a 6-1 victory on Saturday. The Bronchos scored in the first inning to take the lead, but remained scoreless the rest of the game. The Hornets scored a run in the second then capitalized in the fourth scoring four more runs. Emporia State capped their scoring in the eighth with one more run to close out the win.
The Hornets (24-7, 13-4 in the MIAA) will host a three-game series against the University of Central Missouri starting Friday at 6:00 p.m at the Trusler Sports Complex.
