Emporia State extended their win streak to seven games with a 7-3 victory over Lindenwood Saturday night at the Trusler Sports Complex. Seth Holman, junior, pitched 6.1 innings and allowed only two runs on three hits to help pave the way to a Hornet win. Holman struck out eight and walked one.
The Hornets went up early in the first by plating Levi Ashmore, senior infielder, and Alex White, senior infielder, to go up 2-0. The next two innings were scoreless until ESU batted in another run in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-0. The Lions were scoreless until the seventh inning when they scored two to shorten the gap to 3-2. The Hornets were able to answer with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to again give themselves a three-run advantage, and iced game one in the bottom of the eighth as two more Hornets came home to score.
ESU came back Sunday afternoon to capture another victory against Lindenwood. The Hornets won 10-8, improving to 34-8 on the season. Mason Brown, junior catcher, led ESU, going four for five with three RBIs.
Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, then went cold through the next three innings before the Hornets plated another three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead. ESU had a pair of two-run innings followed by another run in the eighth to take a 10-5 lead heading into the ninth. The Lions did not leave quietly as they scored three runs off of two hits, but were unable to tie.
Wade Hanna, senior outfielder, tied for fifth on ESU’s all-time career list with his 41st double on Sunday.
The Hornets were unable to complete the sweep Monday afternoon, falling in the series finale 14-12. There were 34 combined hits between the teams that afternoon.
ESU was up 3-2 at the end of the first inning, but was unable to hold leads throughout the game. In the second inning both teams scored three runs to put the score at 6-5. The third inning marked another two runs for each team, giving ESU an 8-7 lead. The Hornets extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three more runs to build an 11-7 gap only to have the Lions answer with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth to come within one run again heading into the sixth. Lindenwood had at least one run in the final three innings to secure a 14-12 win.
The Hornets will host Northwest Missouri State this weekend at the Trusler Sports Complex. The first game of the two-contest series is scheduled for Friday at 3 p.m.
