Emporia State had an early lead in both games before getting swept by Central Missouri in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Warrensburg, Mo. The Hornets lost 11-3 in game one and dropped game two 8-3.
ESU scored two unearned runs in the top of the first in the afternoon game. Sarah Glass, senior infielder, scored off a Jennies’ error then Jacie Stephens, senior catcher, came home when Danielle Sprinkle, junior outfielder, reached on an another error from the CMU shortstop. The Jennies took the lead on a three-run homer in thesecond inning. Annie Rockley, junior outfielder, scored the last run for ESU when she hit a solo home run to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the third.
Central Missouri scored five runs in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fifth to invoke the run rule.
In the evening game, Hailey Cope, junior infielder, and Katie Rae Nordman, junior infielder, both had RBI-singles to force another 2-0 Hornet lead in the first. Central Missouri took the lead with a four-run third inning that was capped by a three-run home run. With another four-run inning, the Jennies went up 8-2 in the fifth. ESU plated another run in the top of the seventh when Stephens doubled in Cope, but were unable to score further in the 8-3 defeat.
The Hornets (28-22, 13-9 in the MIAA) will wrap up their regular season this weekend beginning with a doubleheader at Northwest Missouri. Game one will begin at 3 p.m. this Friday in Maryville, Mo.with game two following at 5 p.m..
