Emporia State Marching Hornets Colorguard are on the lookout for new recruits. A one-day clinic for Colorguard was held Saturday in HPER to raise interest and awareness.
“Colorguard is the visual aspect of marching band. It provides storytelling through colors and flags and choreography,” said Jenn Woodworth, director of Colorguard. “I don’t require auditions, you get a scholarship for being in the marching band, and it’s a lot of work and a time commitment, but it’s fun because you get to express a lot of creativity.”
During the clinic, Woodworth and experienced Colorguard members taught future Hornets and current students basic moves, techniques, and part of a choreographed routine.
“I learned a little bit of tossing the flag and spinning techniques,” said Tiffany Sanders, freshman elementary education major. “There were difficult moves, but if you keep practicing, you’ll get it.”
Sanders plans on joining Colorguard in the fall semester.
“This year, she (Woodworth) wanted to recruit a whole bunch of people, so this was a great way of doing that,” said Sophia Zurschmiede, member of colorguard and junior communications major. “The clinic is really fun, and people may not realize it at first..it’s really just dipping your toe into the water.”
William Woodworth, director of athletic bands and assistant professor in music said, “I would encourage students to join the Colorguard and the marching band because students come in automatically as a part of a big family. You get a chance to be a part of football games and parades and the atmosphere of the school.”
Neither attending the clinic nor previous experience is required to join. However, all members of marching band, including colorguard, have to attend band camp by signing up for the MU245 course.
Band camp will occur August 14 to 18.
