Looking to build on their last tournament outing, the Hornet softball team traveled to Bentonville, Arkansas this past weekend to take part in the Arkansas-Monticello Tournament.
Emporia State started day one with a 7-6 win over Arkansas Tech and run-ruled Wayne State by a score of 8-0 in five innings.
ATU, who defeated ESU earlier this year, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Hornets plated two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Arkansas Tech got a single run in the fourth to tie the game before ESU erupted for three runs in the top of the fifth. The Hornets scored two runs in the sixth to ice a 7-6 victory.
Runs came early and often for the Hornets in their next game. In the second inning, Hailey Cope, junior infielder, hit a sac fly and Sarah Glass, senior infielder, scored a run on a passed ball. Junior infielder, Katy Rae Nordman hit a two run single in the bottom of the fourth to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead. The first four batters of the fifth all scored for ESU to invoke the run rule.
The Hornets split Saturday’s action falling 5-3 in eight innings to #18 Harding before defeating Drury 7-2 in the nightcap. ESU finished day three of the tournament with a pair of walk-off wins, defeating Minnesota-Duluth 6-5 and #24 Missouri-St. Louis 9-7.
ESU has now gone 8-2 in their last ten games.
The Hornets will travel to St. Cloud, Minnesota to play six games indoors at the Husky Dome this weekend. Tournament action kicks off this Thursday at 4 pm.
