Emporia State fell 84-62 to Southwest Baptist last Saturday in Bolivar, Missouri thanks to the Bearcats’ best shooting performance of the season.
The Hornets opened the game by scoring the first six points and led 8-4 with 13:52 left in the first half. Southwest Baptist then went on a 14-4 run to capture the lead for good. The Bearcats took their biggest lead of the half at 43-21 with 2:23 left in the period before settling with a 47-28 lead going into break.
ESU began the second half with an 8-2 run to pull within 14 with 15:31 left after Terrence Sardin, senior forward, hit a pair of free throws. Southwest Baptist answered with a 7-0 run of their own to go up by 21.The Bearcat lead would never fall below 15 in the rest of the game.
Jay Temaat, senior guard, and Garin Vandiver, junior forward, each scored 11 points to lead the Hornets. As a team, Emporia State shot only 14 of 42 from the field and were 27 of 40 from the free throw line, shooting 33% overall.
The Bearcats hit 30 of 43 shots from the field and were 24 of 28 on two point shots. SBU went ten for ten inside the arc in the second half and shot .698 for the game.
Emporia State (10-10, 6-5 in the MIAA) will return to White Auditorium this Saturday for a conference matchup against the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
