Newly appointed legislative director and junior information systems major, Christina Brunton, gives a speech on her new role in ASG last Thursday in the Senate Chambers. ASG also discussed academic dishonesty and approved four RSO’s.
Last Thursday the Associated Student Government (ASG) met to discuss the recognition of student organizations, as well as potential changes to ASG policies and the academic honesty policy, which will directly affect students.
The current academic honesty policy will see changes in wording. Line 40 of the policy currently defines academic dishonesty as “cheating and plagiarism.” The proposed changes would follow the above phrase with “and any other unethical activity as defined by the faculty or the academic discipline.”
“One of our concerns is the subjectivity of (the policy) and what professors would see as unethical,” said Megan McReynolds, student body president and junior sociology major. “It’s going to be on first readings (in faculty senate) next week…and this would be a good opportunity for ASG to share their feedback.”
Another proposed change to the policy would change the letter grading system by adding a new grade: “XF.” This grade would be used to indicate failure in a course specifically as a result of academic dishonesty. According to McReynolds, the “XF” would be removable from a student’s record after two years.
On first readings this week were two resolutions and four bills. The resolutions were 18002, a Revision of the Constitution of the Associated Students, and 18003, a Resolution for a Paperless ASG.
Two of the bills on first readings were funding allocations for the ESU Cricket Club and the Muslim Student Organization. These allocations totaled $2,152.10.
Christina Brunton, junior information systems major, was chosen for ASG’s Legislative Director position, freeing up her position as chairperson of the Campus and Community Relations committee. The position is now filled by senator Brettany Williams, junior psychology major.
“(Brunton) will represent ASG and ESU at the Kansas Board of Regents and state level,” McReynolds said. “I’m confident that (Brunton) is going to do great things.”
The next ASG meeting will take place at 5:15 p.m. next Thursday Nov. 9 in the Senate Chambers.
