Emporia State Hornet Volleyball took on the University of Nebraska at Kearney and Fort Hays State University on Saturday and Sunday. The Hornets came away from the weekend with both a win and a loss.
Opening the weekend against Nebraska Kearney, Emporia State fell in the first set 19-25. The Hornets won the second set 25-22.
The Nebraska Kearney Lopers controlled the final two sets, and defeated Emporia State with wins of 20-25 and 21-25.
Junior outside hitter Jamie Hauptman led the team with 17 kills, followed by freshman outside hitter Jordan Evans with 16 kills. Freshman setter Yuchen Du led the team with 52 assists, and sophomore defensive specialist Allie Maloney contributed with 27 digs.
Sunday proved to be a better day for the Hornets as they came away with a three-set win against Fort Hays State.
The Hornets took the first set 26-24 despite five lead changes.
The second set saw four lead changes, but again, Emporia State finished the set 25-18. The final set of the match, taken over by the Hornet offense, was won 25-20.
Freshman outside hitter Karly Patton led the team with 13 kills, followed by Evans and Hauptman both with 11. Du finished the match with 34 assists, and Maloney led the team with 15 digs.
Du finished the game with 8 kills, 34 assists, and 13 digs.
The ESU Volleyball team has a record of 14-13.
The next Emporia State volleyball game will be in Warrensburg, Missouri, as they compete against the University of Central Missouri on Saturday at 6 p.m.
