Kathryn Jackson, freshman biology pre-med major, has created three different social media accounts featuring the ducks on Emporia State’s campus.
“I just really (enjoy) the ducks,” Jackson said. “It was something that made me smile, and I was already taking pictures of them, and I thought why not make a fan page?”
The ducks currently have social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The Twitter and Instagram handle is @esu_ducks and the Facebook page is named ESU Ducks. The twitter page is the most popular account with almost 300 followers.
“I definitely love the page,” said Miriam Ward, freshman nursing major. “I’ll be scrolling on Facebook and I’ll just see a post of the ducks and it just brightens up my day a little bit.”
The accounts take submissions of photos and sometimes has help from friends with captions, but Jackson runs the pages on her own.
“I would say about 80 percent are original from me, and then 20 percent are submissions,” Jackson said. “I don’t get a lot, but when I do I always try to include their name.”
According to Jackson they may have accidentally renamed some of the ducks after they were named last semester by the elementary and preschool students in Emporia.
“Duck Service Announcement. The duck with the dark beak is Quack-tain Jack Sparrow, and the one with the black dot over his eye is Gerald,” a post on the ducks’ twitter account read.
Mark Runge, director of university facilities, said that the ducks will be wintered off campus with Patrick Renfro, an HVAC specialist at the University Facilities, who rescues other animals as well.
“I just want to keep reminding students ‘don’t feed them any food,’” Runge said. “You’ll see the signs that say ‘human food equals duck death.’”
