Beacon for Hope, a new local non-profit organization, raised nearly $6,000 during its first annual suicide prevention walk, according to Melissa Kurtenbach, executive director and community adviser for Hornets for Hope. All proceeds will go to help community members become formally trained in mental health and suicide prevention and to fund scholarships for high school students.
“It was a day of hope and healing,” Kurtenbach said, who lost her sister to suicide, motivating her participation in organizing this event. “Connections were made between participants who understand what it’s like to go through the journey of grief and healing.”
The event took place Saturday on Kellogg Circle and included a bake sale, raffle, memory wall and a walk around campus. More than 80 people attended.
The planning for the event started in June, according to Kurtenbach.
“I think it’s important everybody knows that mental health and suicide are a real thing, and they shouldn’t have to hide the fact they are struggling,” said Rebecca Adcock, senior psychology major and volunteer.
Kamryn Dold, winner of Emporia High School variety show, donated her $100 prize to Beacon for Hope and sang her original song “Not Alone” during the event.
“It’s good to talk, good to feel,” said Shannon Spradlin, an Emporia community member who attended because she lost her son.
Beacon for Hope will also raise funds from 8-10 a.m. Dec. 9th at Applebee’s during their Flapjack Fundraiser event.
