The Hornet Women’s Basketball team won 107-88 after coming back from a nine-point deficit in the first quarter to overcome the Eagles in white auditorium.
“Because of the type of game they played, faster and more hectic, it became less about scouting report and more about capitalizing on opportunities,” said sophomore forward, Morgan Laudan. “We did not have to run very much structured offense. We rebounded the ball really well and won most of the 50/50 balls.”
Just four minutes into the game the Hornets were down 10-2. Addy Clift scored the first 14 points for the Eagles while being heavily guarded by the Hornets. She was not shut down as she continued to score for the Eagles in a record scoring game for her with a total of 42 points.
“I don’t think we ran a single play that whole game,” said junior guard and forward, Emily Miller. “The first quarter we were just getting a feel for thing, we got down early but we didn’t panic, we settled and just played basketball.”
Laudan scored 11 of the Hornet Women’s 19 points in the first quarter, ending the quarter 22-19.
The Hornets took their first lead of the night in the second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 34-33 on a two-pointer by Tyra Jones. The Eagles quickly responded with a 3-pointer by Hannah Bentsen about a minute later. The Hornets took the lead at half, 52-46.
The score stayed decently stable throughout the third quarter, though the Hornets gained a significant lead at the end, 78-69.
Jacee Kramer made an assist in the Hornet’s offense as they lead 93-72 with around 7 minutes left in the final quarter.
Brittany Kramer shot a three-pointer with around four minutes left in the fourth quarter extending the Hornets’ lead to 103-77.
The Eagles made a decent gain in the final four minutes of the quarter, scoring 11 points against the Hornets’ 4. Despite the efforts of Oklahoma Christian, their attempts were not enough to overpower the Hornets as they pulled through for the win, 107-88.
“We did a good job of just staying aggressive,” said ESU head coach, Jory Collins. “We didn’t make all of the right decisions but at least being on the attack let us finish a lot of plays.”
MIAA play begins on tomorrow against Nebraska Kearney. Tip-off will be 5:30 p.m. in White Auditorium.
