Garrett Chastain, freshman computer science major, Derek Hahn, freshman social science education major, and Bradley Sullivan, freshman crime and delinquency major, eat dinner yesterday in the Hornet’s Nest. The remodeling, included walls of quotes from famous figures in multiple cultures costing $3,500, according to Carmen Leeds, director of the Memorial Union.
The Hornet’s Nest cafeteria got new decorations designed by Studio E, with help from the Memorial Union, the Diversity Student Program, international education and other students.
Studio E is a graphic design department located in Plumb Hall.
“To come up with the design, we started meeting last spring,” said Carmen Leeds, the director of Memorial Union. “For them to put it up, we did it on Martin Luther King day. They started about 8:30 a.m. They were done at 11:30.”
The Hornet’s Nest hasn’t been changed for six years, according to Leeds.
“There wasn’t very much representation of multicultural people in the union,” said Rosalie Krenger, the general manager of Studio E. “They decided to start with the cafeteria, because that’s the first place most new students come to.”
The new mural says “welcome” in 25 different languages, and there were hexagons added to one wall to represent a hornet’s nest.
There are three small walls that have pictures and quotes by some famous people from different nationalities, cultures, identities, LGBTQ+ culture and people with different levels of disabilities, according to Krenger.
“Altogether, it probably took like two and half months to come up with the different designs for the wall,” said Marcus Robinson, the graphic designer of the new Hornet’s Nest.
It was a challenge to come up with the new design idea with the design the cafeteria had.
Krenger chose the color that was already on the chairs, the floor and in the space. She also didn’t change the fabric and tried to be as cost effective as possible.
“We do have some renovation funds that are left over in the foundation,” Leeds said. “It will be around $5,000 I think. The actual vinyl that went on the wall has $3,500.”
There is another small piece to go in to the Hornet’s Nest new design, which will feature Emporia State students and people from the Emporia area who have made contributions to the community.
