Robert Hart, theatre instructor and director of “He and She,” informs Harriel Mack, senior communication major, Ryan Wollum, freshman speech and theater education major, Torin Horvik, junior art and theatre major and Elizabeth Tate, freshman theatre and communication major, that the “He and She” play will run the full three acts, instead of cutting it down to two like had been previously discussed. The play opens at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 and runs through March 10, with a 2 p.m. showing on Saturday in the Fredrickson Theatre.
The Emporia State theater department is putting on “He and She” by Rachel Crothers, a feminist play that came out of first wave feminism in the United States. The play opens at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 6 and runs through March 10, with a 2 p.m. showing on Saturday in the Fredrickson Theatre.
“It’s all about male and female relationships, particularly in couples,” said Robert Hart, theater instructor and director of “He and She.” “Can you truly be equals in a couple or does somebody have to have more power and what happens when the power is threatened? It’s very relevant to our world today.”
The main characters are Ann, played by Molli McClanahan, sophomore theatre major, and Tom, played by Ryan Wollum, freshman speech and theatre education major. They are married and Tom is a successful, professional sculptor and Ann is an amateur sculptor.
“A big competition comes up, huge, $100,000 in 1921 (and) would set them for life,” Hart said. “She decides to enter, kind of on a lark, but a little bit because she’s pissed off that people dismiss her work…It really threatens their marriage.”
The play will be done in period clothing.
Erin Dublin, senior elementary education major, plays Ellen, the housekeeper and comic relief.
“Ellen gets to come out and lighten the mood a bit,” Dublin said. “I’m very proud of where this play is and the message that it’s bringing to Emporia and the campus.”
The play will be three acts and will have two intermissions.
