With a 9-2-9 vote, ASG passed a senate resolution condemning ESU’s actions handling sexual assault during their March 15 meeting.
“A Resolution to Condemn ESU’s Actions in Regard to Handling Sexual Assault,” was written by Caylie Ratzlaff, sophomore secondary education social sciences and English major, regarding the handling of a sexual assault case at ESU in which, “Jane,” an anonymous international student alleged that tenured psychology professor Brian Schrader of took her to a storage room, touched her inappropriately and attempted to kiss her.
“This is an intricate and important discussion, and we owe all the victims and survivors of sexual harassment, violent, and assault the discussion,” Ratzlaff said. “Senator Wathke made a comment on how we’re a legislative body and we’re not here to condemn individuals, I disagree with this. A resolution is meant to comment on a specific event, or specific subject.”
Ratzlaff also spoke on the issue brought about in the last meeting that suggested taking out names and all individual identifying marks from the resolution.
“We cannot raise the issue of how we disagree with the university’s actions if we do not call them out for the very event they failed to have any remorse for until The Bulletin broke the story,” Ratzlaff said.
Brady Lund, graduate business, said that the resolution could call for an independent investigation that could end in termination, but shouldn’t call for the termination itself.
They also discussed “A Resolution of Demands Upon the Administration of ESU,” which was written by Gage Simpson, ASG senator and political science major. This resolution called for the university to take the following actions:
Removing Brian Schrader from staff/pay, increase transparency in these types of cases, educating students, staff and administration on the issue of sexual assault, what is available to victims in these cases and launch an investigation of all levels of sexual assault including actions of staff, spread a message to perpetrators about the consequences of such actions, more transparency and availability to victims.
“If these demands are not put into action by the administration of ESU it will show that Emporia State University is complicit in sexual violence and will continue to put violent constraints upon victims,” Ratzlaff read from the resolution.
The bill passed 9-2-8, and included the call for termination of Brian Schrader and the mentions of specific details and identifiers in the resolution.
The next ASG meeting will be held at 5:15 p.m. April 12 in the Senate Chambers on the third floor of the Memorial Union.
