Seth Holman, senior right handed pitcher, has played baseball since he was four years old.
When he graduated from high school at Bishop Carroll it was the natural progression for him to continue to play at a collegiate level. His dream was to play at a Division 1 school, but his D1 experience at the University of Southern Mississippi wasn’t what he expected, Holman said.
“It (USM) was big, a lot of times I just felt like a number,” said Holman.
Throughout his collegiate career, Holman has played at several universities, including Cowley County Community College, USM and finally, Emporia State.
It wasn’t until his transfer to ESU that he found a school he considered to be his home, Holman said. Yet, Holman didn’t find his way to ESU until he had injured his shoulder a second time, went through surgery and spent an entire year covering.
Holman went on his first campus visit to ESU while he was a senior in high school, after some encouragement from his dad. He ultimately declined the offer to play at ESU, and signed at Cowley, where he played for two years , Holman said.
After two years at Cowley, Holman received an offer from USM, which he took.
He felt like just a number, due to the size of the school and decided to transfer after a year, Holman said.
Holman decided to visit ESU for the second time, because of its successful baseball program, he said.
“I stepped on campus again and it just felt like home,” Holman said.
This season for the Hornet men has been one with many ups and downs. Despite the downs, Holman finds a way to stay positive and keep the team energy up, helping lead the Hornet men to grow and better themselves.
“Seth is a great guy and team leader for us,” said Mack Gowing, senior left fielder. “He is constantly competing on the mound and setting the tone for us. Seth adds experience and leadership for our team. He is an older guy that we can always rely on.”
Holman has proved to be a reliable leader for the team since his transfer to ESU, said Coach Bob Fornelli.
“Seth is one of the best young men we have had at Emporia State, he’s reliable, you know what you are going to get, he’s always going to work hard,” Fornelli said, “He’s a guy that is going to make a great effort everyday and not back down from any challenges.”
