The Emporia State Men’s Baseball team played three games this past weekend, including a double-header Feb. 8 and a single game Feb. 9. They played against Metro State University in all three games and ended with a winning streak of 3-3, undefeated for the weekend away games in Denver, Colorado.
“The deeper in the season we go the more we will gel, but right now is a good start,” said senior left fielder Mack Gowing. “I think we are working right now to be completely prepared for upcoming conference play. I think what we are all trying to improve on is the mental side of the game.”
In the first game that was played was against Metro State University, the Hornets defeated them, 9-8 in a close first match. By the top of the eighth inning the Hornets were up 8-7. Recovering in the bottom of the 8th inning, Kaden Shaffer, senior 1B, created one more run for the Hornets, allowing them to take the lead going into the top of the ninth inning. At the conclusion of the game the Hornets came out on top.
The second game in the three against Metro State University ended in a 5-1 win. In the first three innings the Hornets took the lead, 2-0. This continued into the seventh inning, where they scored three runs and Metro State University scored one. This brought the score to 5-1 at the completion of the game.
The third and final game of the tournament was also resulted in a win. They played for the third time this weekend, taking on Metro State University and defeating them 10-6. The game was fairly evenly matched until the end of the seventh inning where the Hornets scored five runs and came out on top.
“I believe we played tough this weekend,” said junior second baseman Brian Grove. “We grinded out at bats and pitched with a lot of grit. We did what we had to in order to win.”
The Hornets will be back in action this coming weekend in their opening against Newman University. The first pitch will be thrown tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. at the Trusler Complex.
